Scales

XENTONE has seven default scales: 12ET, for comparison and reference, and six Just Intonation scales which teach the default tuning for the Xones according to harmonic limits. There are two ways to use scales, by engaging the from Scale check boxes in the Xones field and in the Interval Practice box.

Xones:

Interval Practice:

When in Interval Mode, it is possible to use the Random Root option without engaging from Scale in the Xones field, so that default xone intervals are transposed on random roots from an arbitrary scale. For example, you could create a scale of 5ET and use this to give random roots for the default xone intervals.

Viewing Scales

With from Scale selected in the Xones field, clicking on a scale in the scale list, or navigating the list using arrow keys, will activate those xones corresponding to the scale entries. When multiple scale degrees map to the same xone, multiple names are shown on the xone buttons. Sometimes these entries will be difficult to see if the entry is long or there are many entries per xone. To see the scale in a popup list, click the disclosure triangle next to a scale in the scale list.

Editing Scales

Selecting Edit Scale from a scale popup list or clicking the Edit button under the scale list opens the selected scale in a window, allowing you to edit and save the scale. Note that the five default scales at the top of the list do not exist as files, but are part of XENTONE program code, so if you alter these scales and save them, they will then be loaded in addition to the unedited scales, which cannot be changed by the user.

Scale Formats

Presently, imported scales must be written in the .scl Scala format, where entries may be either cents or rations, and the .tun format, where entries are cents values. More formats may be added in the future. Keep in mind that the scale editor saves files in the .scl file format, so if you import a .tun file, then edit and save it using the Edit Scale window, the .tun library file will be changed to a .scl file.

Importing Scales

Scale files in .scl or .tun format may be imported to XENTONE. When a scale is imported, it is copied to the directory XENTONE Library > Scales inside the XENTONE application folder

A library of Scala files is available from the Scala downloads webpage. NOTE: a large number of files in the Scales directory will make XENTONE start up more slowly, as all the files in this directory are scanned at startup. Therefore there is an option in the Preferences window to turn off Scales directory scanning at startup. The Rescan button can then be used to load the scales while the program is running. If you make changes to the Scales directory while the program is running, clicking Rescan will update the list.
