3 Software Updates: microsynth, ScalaVista, MIDI Tapper

March 02, 2018

Today I'm glad to announce the release of three software updates, for microsynth, ScalaVista, and MIDI Tapper. Some fixes and improvements are common to all three apps. Here's the run down:

License Authorisation Bug

A mysterious license authorisation problem has finally been fixed. Some users have reported from time to time that a software reverts back into demo mode after the software is quit, or after the machine has been restarted. For some time this affected only some Windows users, and then with the release of OSX Sierra, I started getting reports of the same thing on Mac.

64-bits

64-bit apps have been around for some time now — better late than never to join the trend. Mac versions of ScalaVista, and MIDI Tapper are now compiled as 64-bit apps. I have not been able to get Windows 64-bit compiling to work yet, so for now Windows versions remain 32-bit. [EDIT: earlier I mistakenly listed microsynth as being 64-bit now, but it also remains 32-bit because it continues to be compiled to run on Snow Leopard, and the tool used for that does not allow compiling as a 64-bit app.]

Hi-DPI (Retina) Displays

Ultra-sharp displays that have twice or more the number of pixels have also been around for some time now, but I've waited a good long while to support them in my software. Some graphics may continue to look a little less sharp on the Hi-DPI displays, but text should appear super-crisp now if your machine supports it. This improvement applies both to Mac and Windows.

microsynth

microsynth users sending MIDI to external destinations were sometimes flummoxed by immediate crashes upon sending MIDI data. This was because the polyphony setting would somehow default to 0 (zero) voices, when it should have been 16. The fix was to select the menu item and change the value, but now thankfully you won't need to bother with that silly step.

Other users experienced crashing whenever a particular MIDI controller was used, or when a particular slider, knob, pad, or button on some controller was pressed. This turned out to be a problem with handling CC messages which has now been fixed, so connect all those oddball controllers and off you go!

ScalaVista

Apart from the above common issues, there were no other bugs specific to this app that needed fixing. The "Send scale to" function has been expanded to include the upcoming destination Universal Tuning Editor (UTE).

MIDI Tapper

Serious users of this software use the Splice window to quickly put together various takes of a tapped performance. Sometimes when opening the Splice window, MT would show the crash window. Clicking Continue in this case would allow the user to continue normally, but now that problem has been taken care of.

When selecting notes and assigning them to a new Track, two odd things sometimes happened. First, the selected notes would disappear. Second, if the source file contained pitch bend, the app would crash without the option to continue. I'm happy to say that both of these problems have been fixed.
